Neechie-Itas
by Oklahoma Indigenous Theatre Company
Written by Jo MacDonald (Anishinaabe)
Somewhere in a Canadinan province, jilted bride Spencer marks each year of her would be wedding date in her apartment, dressed in her $5000 wedding dress, binge-watching period piece movies. To cheer her up, her Neechies plan a weekend of nightlife and dancing. Instead, chaos ensues when Spencer's ex-fiancé appears at the dance club, and a mysterious arrow is fired narrowly missing him. Probable cause lands the Neechies in jail for questioning by police. Jo MacDonald writes Indigenous comedy gold to explore the consequences of keeping secrets, value of loyalty and Indigenous sisterhood.
Neechie-Itas was adapted from Jo’s stage play into digi-theatre and produced 100% virtually using Stream Yard. Daniel Leeman Smith, filmographer and digital designer, enhanced the storytelling with still photography, SFX, b-roll cut-aways, original songs from the iconic female drum group Mankillers and more. The Neechies made their international debut during the Vancouver Fringe Online Festival, September 2021 and since then, have streamed on demand. Chi-miigwech to Jo MacDonald for her creative collaboration and support of this project!
